چکیده

The lipid on the surface of human skin is composed of wax esters and squalene from the sebaceous glands, cholesterol and cholesterol esters arising predominantly from the superficial epidermis, and glycerides plus free fatty acids from both sources. The activity of the sebaceous glands goes th rough a number of phases and is largely dependent on underlying endocrine factors. It is high immediately after birth, low in childhood, rises in advance of puberty, becomes high in adolescence and earl y adult !i fe, declines stead ily with age, perhaps more steepl y in females after the menopause, and becomes low in old age. These changes affect the amount and composition of the skin surface lipid and may be important in relati on to the physiological properties, susceptibility to disorders, and cosmetic attributes of the skin.

Maternal Recto-Vaginal Organisms and Surface Skin Colonization in Infants

Background: Early-onset sepsis is a common cause of neonatal mortality and mainly occurs due to the colonized microorganisms in the maternal recto-vaginal area. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal risk factors on recto-vaginal colonization and transmission rate of micro-flora from mothers to infants. Methods: Upon admission, two samples were obtained from the distal thi...

بررسی خصوصیات بیوفیزیکی و روش‌های تصویربرداری پوست (بخش اول)

Skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system with multiples important functions. Due to its complex structure, the permeability skin status can be modified by different external and internal factors such as chemical and physical stresses, and several skin and systemic diseases. Today, different non-invasive methods are used to assess the skin barrier biophysical properties. The paramet...

Inter-and intra-individual differences in skin hydration and surface lipids measured with mid-infrared spectroscopy

Skin health is characterized by heterogeneous system of water and lipids in upper layers providing protection from external environment and preventing loss of vital components of the body. Skin hydration (moisture) and sebum (skin surface lipids) are considered to be important factors in skin health; a right balance between these components is an indication of healthy skin and plays a central r...

Excretion of sterols from the skin of normal and hypercholesterolemic humans. Implications for sterol balance studies.

The 24 hr sterol excretion from the entire skin surface was determined in six normal and five hypercholesterolemic (Type II) patients fed a controlled, eucaloric diet containing 400 mg of plant sterols. All subjects received radiolabeled cholesterol intravenously in order to measure cholesterol turnover and exchange. The 24 hr skin surface lipids were collected subsequently at intervals of 7-10...

Excretion rate and composition of skin surface lipids on the foreheads of adult males with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia.

OBJECTIVES Most of the lipids of the skin surface come from sebaceous glands secretions, called sebum. Some of the sebum lipids are synthesized by sebaceous cells while some are reportedly derived from the plasma. Role of blood lipoproteins in sebum secretion rate and composition is unclear. To this end, excretion rate and composition of skin surface lipids of normo- and type IV hyperlipoprotei...
